Phase One of the Custom House regeneration is well under way with 95 affordable new social homes due for completion this summer, 39 of them larger family homes and 10 fully wheelchair accessible.
Visiting the sites at Freemasons Road and William Paton, Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE said: “As a former ward councillor for Custom House I am particularly delighted to see these beautiful new homes for our local community begin to come on line.
“They will become home to many families in desperate need for decent and truly affordable homes in their own communities.
“I’m proud to say this first phase of regeneration is delivered through our Affordable Homes for Newham programme, which has already delivered 500 homes and is on track to deliver 1000 more by 2026. This is a critical part of how Newham is delivering our part of the government’s ambitious 1.5million new homes pledge.
“Newham has made the fourth highest number of new homes starts anywhere in the UK in the past year, and the second highest number of both starts and new home completions in London, and we have plans in place to go further.
“As well as providing stunning new homes, the scheme has also supported the Council’s Community Wealth Building aspirations creating 82 jobs and 13 apprenticeships for local people.”
Contractor Hill has also engaged with local schools and offered work-experience for local pupils.
Michael Turner, Regional Director at The Hill Group said: “We are delighted to be working closely with our partners at London Borough of Newham to deliver this outstanding affordable housing. We have built the new homes here to Passivhaus standards and hope they will have a positive impact on the environment and on the lives of local people for many generations to come. Creating these vital homes has also generated huge social value to the community, including 13 apprenticeships and more than 80 new local jobs."
The homes are being offered to eligible residents in the Custom House phase 1 masterplan including families in temporary accommodation, giving them a permanent home in the neighbourhood and part of how Newham council aims to drive down the costs of temporary accommodation costs.
The homes will be allocated via a “local lettings plan” which the Council has developed with the Custom House resident steering group.
